Tower Crane Rescue Training

Location- National Children’s Hospital, Dublin

Industry Training Services (ITS) delivered tower crane rescue training for BAM Ireland on what is currently Ireland’s largest project, The National Children’s Hospital in Dublin.

Dominating the skyline with 4 cranes and an additional 5 in place by the end of the 2018, BAM Ireland wants to ensure their onsite operators and supervisors are sufficiently trained to deal with potential emergency rescue situations from a Tower Crane.

Specialising in Tower Crane Rescue, ITS worked closely with the health and safety team at BAM Ireland to tailor a programme specific to the needs of the site ensuring the training was relatable and practical.

Candidates were initially introduced to the theory of the course, and were familiarised with the relevant equipment. They were trained in areas such as identification of anchor points, inspecting and correct fitting of a full body harness and basic casualty management before progressing to the practical elements of this course.

The practical training is scenario based where candidates choose suitable anchor points, install the rescue systems and problem solve casualty management as well as deciding the best system to use depending on the style of rescue being carried out.

It was a particularly windy day gusting at over 70k km/hr, which added to the hazards however the candidates were confident in their approach to take their casualty down the mast of the crane rather than the main jib. This is technically more difficult however the exercises carried out at lower-level scaffold earlier that morning built up the teams’ confidence enabling to make this call.

“The training provided by ITS exceeded our expectations. A very practical course, it has left our employees confident in their ability to manage an emergency situation. The candidates learned that the same systems could be utilised for almost any rescue from structures at height which is invaluable in our construction-based environment. We look forward to working with ITS for our future training requirements.”
