What is a confined space?

A confined space is an enclosed or partially enclosed space with limited access and egress, not designed for continuous occupancy, and where hazardous conditions may exist or develop. Examples of confined spaces include storage tanks, silos, sewers, manholes, tunnels, boiler vessels, crawl spaces, and ship compartments, among others.

What is the difference between a confined space and a permit-required confined space (PRCS)?

A confined space becomes a PRCS when it contains or has the potential to contain hazards that may require special precautions for entry. These include atmospheric monitoring, ventilation, and a confined space entry permit.

Who can enter a confined space?

Only trained and authorised personnel should enter confined spaces. Depending on the type of confined space, a team may need to include an entrant, attendant, and supervisor, each with specific responsibilities. Any employee who may work in or around confined spaces, including entrants, attendants, supervisors, and rescue personnel, should receive proper training.

What topics are covered in confined space training?

Training typically covers hazard identification, safe entry and exit procedures, air monitoring, use of safety equipment, emergency rescue procedures, and the roles and responsibilities of entrants, attendants, and supervisors.
