The N.I. Streetworks order 1995 covers work executed within a street by an undertaker exercising a statutory right to inspect, place and maintain pipes, cables, sewers, drains, etc. which are laid in the carriageway or footway.

The term undertaker also covers holders of Street Works Licences. It is now a legislative requirement for anyone working in public highways to have a Streetworks Qualification.

The Government is now committed, through legislation, to reducing the incidence of accidents by the establishment and enforcement of:

National standards of signing, lighting and guarding.

National standards of competence in the form of qualifications for operatives and supervisors.
